Orange County Business Journal: TadHealth Helps Schools Recover Mental Health Claims

TadHealth’s electronic health record platform is helping school’s get reimbursed for providing mental health services.

The Newport Beach-based tech startup has partnered with Anaheim Elementary School District (AESD), saving the district more than $700,000 in state reimbursements, with the amount expected to surpass $1 million in the coming weeks, according to the district.

“This is the turning point,” TadHealth founder and Chief Executive Ben Greiner said in a statement.

“Anaheim Elementary’s success shows that schools can now keep vital mental health staff in place and give students the support they need—without waiting years for funding to trickle down.”

TadHealth said its platform streamlines the entire process from claims submission to reimbursement for state funding such as the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), a $4 billion, five-year initiative launched in 2021 aimed at expanding school-based behavioral health services for students.

The company currently supports more than 1,000 providers serving nearly 300,000 students in California for the CYBHI program.

First Successful Claim Submission

CYHBI reimbursements first became available in 2024.

The fee schedule covers a variety of mental health services, including screening and assessments, therapy, case management and psychoeducation.

More than 150 California school districts and county offices of education were approved to participate in the program; however, they have struggled to access funding due to compliance and administrative barriers, according to TadHealth.

Last November, the Nevada Joint Union High School District was the first to submit a successful claim through TadHealth.

“By submitting this first claim, we’ve demonstrated that CYBHI can be a powerful and actionable framework for ensuring mental health services reach the students who need them most,” Greiner said.

The company said its platform is capable of submitting claims in under 60 seconds, helping districts replace “weeks” of manual paperwork.

Raised $7M+ to Date

TadHealth closed on a $5.5 million Series A funding round in April.

Prior funding includes a $1.6 million seed round, which was covered by the Business Journal last year.

Halcyon Venture Partners led the round with participation from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering Venture Fund, Halcyon Angels and RevFund, a seed fund of Irvine-based social enterprise incubator RevHubOC.

The latest funding has supported the company’s expansion efforts in response to increasing demand for its services, the company said.

More than half, or 53%, of public schools in the U.S. reported student demand for school-based mental health resources increased compared to the prior year, with 56% citing inadequate funding as a limiting factor to effectively provide these services, according to a 2024-2025 report from the National Center for Education Statistics.

TadHealth, founded by Greiner in 2021, had a soft launch a year later.

TadHealth was born out of Greiner’s personal experience supporting a close friend through a mental health crisis and struggle to access timely services.

“I couldn’t access the school’s resources at that moment and really wanted to create change,” Greiner previously told the Business Journal.

Greiner earned a master’s degree in applied psychology at USC, where he was accepted into the university’s Viterbi Startup Garage, helping him get the company off the ground.
